Navien Tankless and Condensing Water Heaters in Waukee
Navien makes high-efficiency tankless water heaters and combination boilers. A tankless heater has no big storage tank. It heats water only when you open a tap, so you do not pay to keep a tank hot all day. Many Waukee families like this style for new homes and for remodels where space is tight.
Navien units are often condensing models. They capture extra heat from the exhaust gas and use it to warm the water. That makes them efficient. It also means the exhaust is cool and wet, so the vent pipes and drain are different from those on a standard heater. We are an independent plumber and do not work for Navien. If you have a unit, or are thinking about one, call +1 (515) 585-4137.
Here is how it works. When you open a hot tap, flow sensors tell the unit to fire the burner. Cold water moves through a heat exchanger, where the flame heats it quickly. Hot water leaves toward your fixture. When you close the tap, the burner shuts off. Because the heater only runs when needed, hot water does not run out the way a tank can.
That performance depends on good installation. A tankless unit needs enough gas, a correct vent, and clean water. If any one of these is wrong, the unit may throw errors, make cold bursts, or shut down.
Common Navien Problems We Fix
- Error codes on the display or a unit that will not light.
- Ignition faults and clicking with no flame.
- Scale on the heat exchanger that cuts flow and heat.
- Cold water bursts in the middle of a shower.
- Clogs in the condensate drain or its trap.
- Vent problems, including blocked or frozen terminals.
Error Codes and Ignition Faults
When a Navien unit finds a problem, it shows an error code. The code points to the area that failed, such as ignition, flame sensing, venting, or water flow. A code does not always mean a part is broken. It may be a sign that the gas pressure is low, a vent is blocked, or the flow is below the minimum the unit needs to fire.
We read the code, check the gas supply, inspect the vent and the condensate line, and test the flame sensor and igniter. Many faults come from dirt or scale and not from a failed board. We clean first and replace parts only when needed. That keeps your cost down and fixes the real cause.
Scale and Cold Water Bursts
Central Iowa has moderately hard water. Over time, minerals bake onto the inside of the heat exchanger as the water gets hot. That crust narrows the passage and acts like insulation. The unit works harder, the flow drops, and you may notice cold bursts or long waits for hot water.
Descaling fixes this. We flush the heat exchanger with a safe descaling solution and a small pump, then rinse it out. We also clean the inlet screen, where grit collects. Doing this on schedule, often once a year, protects the unit. In very hard water, you may need it more often. Read more on repairing or replacing a water heater if your unit is getting old.
Choosing the Right Navien Setup

A tankless heater needs far more gas at once than a tank does. A tank heater may use a small amount while it heats slowly. A tankless unit fires at a high rate to heat water as it flows. That means your gas line must be large enough, and the meter must be able to deliver it. Many older homes have lines that are too small. We check the size and length of the run and tell you if an upgrade is needed. Our gas line installation and repair page covers this work.
Venting is the second piece. Condensing models use plastic vent pipe, and the run must slope the right way so moisture drains back. The vent should end where wind and snow will not block it. In Iowa winters, ice and drifting snow can cover a vent terminal, so location matters. We plan the path before we start.
Third, think about flow rate. Each fixture uses a certain number of gallons per minute. Add up what you might run at the same time, such as a shower and a dishwasher. Pick a model that can handle that. Winter makes the job harder, because incoming water is colder, so the heater must add more heat. A unit that works in July may struggle in January if it is too small.
Lastly, consider a recirculation option if you hate waiting for hot water. It keeps warm water near the fixtures. We can explain the trade-offs so you do not spend on features you will not use.
How We Install and Service Navien Units
For an install, we confirm gas, vent, power, and water. We set the unit on the wall, add isolation valves so it can be flushed later, and connect the vent and condensate drain. We neutralize and route the condensate to a proper drain. Then we fire the unit, check the combustion, and test flow at your taps.
For service, we ask about the symptoms and the age of the unit. We look at error history, filter condition, and vent status. Then we flush, clean, and test. If a part needs replacing, we show it to you and explain why. You get the price before we begin. If your old tank heater is failing, see our water heater installation and repair page.
Signs Worth Acting On
- Error codes on the display.
- Cold water bursts during a shower.
- Weaker hot water flow at the taps.
- Water dripping from the condensate line or around the unit.
- Unusual noise from the burner or the vent.
These signs often get worse in winter, when the unit works the hardest. If your heater has quit and the house is cold, call us right away. If you smell gas, leave the home and call your gas utility from outside. Do not try to fix a gas problem yourself.
Care Tips for Navien Units
Descale the heat exchanger once a year, or on the schedule that fits your water. Clean the inlet water filter every few months, since it catches grit that would harm the unit. Check the condensate drain and its trap so water can flow out freely. A clogged drain can shut the heater off.
Keep the vent pipes clear. In spring and summer, birds and insects like to nest in vent terminals. In winter, ice and snow can block them. Walk around your home after storms and look at the vent. Our guide on how to prevent frozen pipes in Iowa also helps protect your unit and its lines in cold snaps.
Keep the area around the unit clear. Do not store paint, cleaners, or other chemicals near it. Fumes can pass through the intake and cause damage. Also keep the power on in winter, because the unit uses its electric parts to protect against freezing.
Repair or Replace?
Repair when the unit is fairly young and the problem is something like scale, a dirty sensor, or a clogged drain. These fixes bring the heater back to normal at a modest cost. Replace when the heat exchanger leaks, when repair bills keep rising, or when the unit no longer meets your needs because your family has grown.
Cost depends on the model, the gas and vent work, and how hard the install is. We will walk you through the pieces and give a clear price. We do not invent exact numbers before we have seen the home.
Look at your paperwork for warranty terms. Tankless makers often offer separate coverage for the heat exchanger and for other parts, and the terms may depend on proper installation and maintenance. Keep your receipt and service records. If you are unsure, we can tell you what we see, and you can check with the maker.
Other Tankless Options and Help
Comparing brands? See Rinnai, another popular tankless maker, or look at Rheem for tank, hybrid, and tankless choices. We also cover A. O. Smith and Bradford White. For emergencies, visit our emergency plumbing page or contact us to set a time.
Tip: Write down the error code before you reset the unit. It tells us where to start.
Questions We Hear Most
Do you service Navien?
Yes. We repair and install Navien products and can advise on a good model for your home. We are an independent plumber and not tied to any one brand.
How often should a tankless heater be descaled?
Once a year is a good rule. Homes with very hard water may need it more often. Regular descaling keeps flow strong and protects the heat exchanger.
Why does my hot water turn cold for a few seconds?
Scale, a clogged filter, or very low flow can cause cold bursts. Sometimes the unit shuts off because flow dips below its minimum. We find the cause and fix it.
Will my gas line work for a tankless heater?
Often it must be larger than a tank heater line. We measure the run and check the supply. If an upgrade is needed, we tell you before work begins.
Can a tankless heater freeze in winter?
Units have freeze protection, but it needs power. Keep the heater plugged in, insulate exposed pipes, and keep the vent clear of ice.
