Kohler Toilets, Sinks, and Faucets Around Waukee

Kohler two-piece toilet installed in a Waukee bathroom

Kohler is one of the best-known names in the bathroom. The brand makes toilets, sinks, bathtubs, showers, and faucets in a very wide range of styles. You will find Kohler in older ranch homes in Des Moines and in new builds across Waukee, Clive, and Urbandale.

We are an independent plumber. We do not work for Kohler and we are not an official agent. Our job is to give you honest advice and good workmanship. If you have a question about a Kohler product in your home, call +1 (515) 585-4137.

Most people meet Kohler through the toilet. A toilet looks simple, but it has a few key parts. The bowl holds water and sends waste out through a curved trap. The tank holds the water for each flush. Inside the tank, a fill valve refills the water, and a flapper or flush valve lets the water out. When those small parts wear, the toilet runs, leaks, or flushes weakly.

Kohler also makes faucets with ceramic-disc cartridges, kitchen sinks in cast iron and steel, and walk-in showers. Each product has its own parts and its own quirks, so a plumber who knows how they go together saves you time.

Common Kohler Problems We Fix

  • A toilet that runs on and off or hisses after you flush.
  • A weak or slow flush.
  • Water around the base of the toilet.
  • A loose seat or a bowl that rocks.
  • A dripping faucet cartridge.
  • A slow drain in a Kohler sink or tub.

The Running Toilet

A running toilet is the top Kohler call we get. The usual cause is a worn flapper that no longer seals, or a fill valve that does not shut off. You can test it. Put a few drops of food coloring in the tank and wait fifteen minutes. If color shows in the bowl, the flapper is leaking. Water trickling into the bowl all day can add a lot to your water bill without making any noise at all.

We replace worn flush parts with the right match for your tank. We also check the water level and the chain length, since a chain that is too tight or too loose causes the same trouble. If your toilet is very old and parts are hard to find, we may suggest a new toilet instead. Our toilet repair and installation page explains more.

Leaks at the Base

Water on the floor around a toilet is not always from the toilet. It could be sweat from a cold tank, a loose supply line, or a failed wax ring. The wax ring is the seal between the toilet and the drain flange. When it fails, water seeps out at the base and can rot the subfloor over time. A rocking toilet often breaks that seal.

We pull the toilet, inspect the flange, install a new seal, and set the toilet level and snug. We do not over-tighten the bolts, because porcelain can crack. If the floor is soft or stained, we show you before we put anything back so you can decide what to do.

Choosing the Right Kohler Model

Plumber measuring toilet rough-in distance in a Waukee bathroom

Fit matters more than style with a toilet. The most important measure is the rough-in, which is the distance from the finished wall to the center of the drain. Most toilets use a twelve inch rough-in, but older homes can differ. Buy a toilet with the wrong rough-in and it will sit too close or too far from the wall.

Bowl shape is the next choice. A round bowl is shorter and good for a small room. An elongated bowl is longer and many people find it more comfortable. Height matters too. A taller bowl is easier on knees and backs. Measure the space and think about who uses the bathroom.

Flush design is the third piece. Modern toilets use less water per flush than older models, and a good design still clears the bowl well. Some people like a one-piece toilet because it is easy to wipe clean. Others like a two-piece model because it is simpler to carry and replace. We will walk through those trade-offs.

For faucets and sinks, match the fixture to the holes in your counter and the size of your cabinet. For a tub or shower, check that the valve matches the trim. Our team measures first so what you buy fits and seals well.

How We Install and Repair Kohler Products

Every visit starts with a look at the problem and a clear price. You say yes before we begin. We shut off the water, protect your floor, and remove the old fixture with care. We check the drain, the shutoff valves, and the supply lines. New braided supply lines are cheap, and they prevent many burst-hose leaks.

After the new part is in, we test it. For a toilet, we flush several times, look for leaks at every joint, and make sure the bowl refills to the right level. For a faucet, we test hot, cold, and the drain. We haul away the old fixture if you like, and we leave the room tidy.

If a drain is slow, the fixture may not be the cause. A clog in the line can make a new toilet flush poorly. We can clear it with a drain snake or a hydro jet. Read about our drain cleaning and hydro jetting if that sounds familiar.

Signs Worth Acting On

  • A constant running sound from the tank.
  • Water on the floor near the toilet.
  • A weak flush that needs a second try.
  • A loose seat or a toilet that rocks.
  • A faucet that drips when it is off.

Small signs often come before big repairs. A toilet that runs a little today can waste hundreds of gallons in a month. A rocking bowl can break the seal and soak the floor. Act early and the fix is usually small.

Care Tips for Kohler Fixtures

Wipe the outside of the toilet and check the bolts at the base once in a while. Do not crank them tight. Just make sure the bowl does not move. Look at the area around the floor for stains or soft spots. Clean the bowl with a mild cleaner. Drop-in tank tablets often harm rubber parts, so skip them.

Replace flush parts every few years. Flappers and fill valves are cheap, and fresh ones prevent running water and high bills. In Iowa, hard water speeds up wear, so a home with a lot of scale may need parts more often. A water softener can help.

For faucets, clean the aerator, and use mild soap on the finish. Only flush toilet paper and human waste. Wipes labeled flushable can still clog the line, and they cause many sewer backups. If you ever see signs of a larger drain problem, read our guide on signs of a sewer line problem.

Repair or Replace?

Repair a toilet when the bowl and tank are sound and only the working parts have failed. That is a modest job. Replace it when the porcelain has cracks, when the toilet clogs again and again, or when the old model wastes a lot of water. A new toilet can also be worth it if you are updating the room.

Price depends on the model, the work needed, and the shape of your floor. A simple flush kit costs less than a full install. We explain your options in plain words so you can choose.

Always check your paperwork. Kohler products can come with a limited warranty, and the terms differ from one product to the next. Look at your receipt, the manual, or the box. A manufacturer warranty may cover parts, while labor is often separate. We are happy to look at the problem and tell you what we find so you can make a claim.

Questions We Hear Most

Do you service Kohler?

Yes. We repair and install Kohler products and can advise on a good model for your home. We are independent, so you get plain advice without a sales push.

Why does my Kohler toilet keep running?

A worn flapper or a bad fill valve is the usual cause. A chain that is too tight can do the same thing. Replacing the flush parts normally stops it.

How do I know what size toilet to buy?

Measure the rough-in from the wall to the center of the drain. Also think about bowl shape and height. We can measure for you and help you pick a good fit.

Is water at the base of the toilet an emergency?

Not always, but do not ignore it. Shut off the supply valve behind the toilet and call us. Leaks at the base can damage the floor over time.

Can you haul away my old toilet?

Yes, we can remove it when we install the new one. Just let us know when you book.
